Week 4 (OAH)

Today in class we discussed about the Egyptian Civilization.

We started the class by discussing about all the thoughts that come in our mind when we talk about the Egyptian Civilization, they are:

  • The sun god Ra
  • Humans being slaves
  • Mummification
  • Pyramids
  • Afterlife
  • The River Nile
  • Objects used as symbols
  • Sphinx

Egyptian Civilization was divided into 3 phases- Old Egypt, Middle Egypt and New Egypt.

1. Old Kingdom

It’s close to the Neolitic age.

  • Materials: Crocodile bones, Teracotta, Bones
  • Pots: Storage, stories, decoration, cultural development, to study antiquity.
  • Jewellery: Some bracelets were made up of bones and precious stones.

2. Modern Kingdom

  • Objects had symbolism
This picture depicts life after death, it was believed that after dying a person would go underground and his/her heart and a feather would be kept on the scale and that would decide whether the person goes to the afterlife or not. In this drawing, there is a pot kept on the scale instead of a heart which shows that the objects have symbolism.
  • There were paintings on every persons tomb wall depicting what role they played in their life
  • Cloth: Linen, Paparus
  • hand mirrors, jewellery
  • coffins(late egyptian era) were well decorated.
  • Pyramids
The Sphinx is a solid structure and there’s no way to enter it. It is believed that a British boy stole the nose and broke it and hence it doesn’t have one.

3. New Kingdom

  • There were amulets, gold as well as much more jewellery.
  • Egyptians were the first civilization to master gold- using it in jewellery, carving, statue.
  • There were many Egyptian riches
  • Alabaster (kind of marble) was often found
