Week 3 (OAH)

We started the class by talking about the Mesopotamian Civilization

Mesopotamia is a fertile land as it is near water bodies (mainly rivers). It is a habitable land. As it is a fertile land, agriculture was possible in this area. This was a very organised civilization.

Ma’am talked about City State. City States were cities that performed like a state. Someone (priests, people with authority, power, money) took charge of the city.

The division in Mesopotamia was the Assyria Dynasty and the Sumer Dynasty.

We discussed about a carving- The Victory. It indicates that the king has defeated his enemies and they’re wandering off. It also shows the use of bow and arrow. We reasoned which each other on why they were fighting- capturing of land which was rich in resources, trading or goods and human. Humans were slaves, they were captured if a particular city was defeated in war.

We saw a picture of conch shells with engravings on them, probably used for gifting or trading. Every piece had a signature, a way for recording their lineage.

We saw a few more artifacts with decorations which could mean that decorating was a need and they also had the time to do all this. Decorating items meant recording of the culture of the civilization through art. They also had hairstyles and attires which could depict a sense of devotion. Babylon and Mesopotamia had a lot of gold so there was abundant trading shown in the tabs.

A tablet also showed the interlocking of the heads of two animals. This indicated that they believed in fantasy animals like dragons, they also had great imagination skills. Zoos were first found in Mesopotamia. Zigorets are a symbol for architectural development. It also implied that there was advancement in math, there were architects, there were blue-prints made and there was some sort of drawing and planning.

There also prevailed hierarchy- there were 3 layers- one of people sitting and people with the highest authority were drawn with much more detail, the second one with lesser authority were drawn with fewer details and the last one of people walking drawn as silhouettes.
