Week 2 (Time)

Today we talked about Egyptian Mythology. They worship the Sun God Ra who symbolises order(also called maat). They believed that his brass chariot would race across the sky for tracking the sun. It was said he was born each morning in the East, and died each night in the West. In the night he traveled through the underworld. This is why the west side of the Nile was known as the land of the dead. He was the king of the gods. It’s believed that the people saw 7 bright stars in the sky and that’s how they came up with the 7 days of the week. They named the 7 days after Gods(Norse Mythology).

We then talked about how time was represented in art. A skull depicts death and hence the Grim Reaper was portrayed as death through art. A painting by Salvador Dali called “Persistence of Memory” was also time depicted through art. We then discussed about a painter- Jackson Pollock and reviewed his paintings and shared our views about them.

We did an activity in class. Sir asked us to think of daily things that we see around and how they depict time. For instance, a cigarette when lit slowly shortens in length and hence it depicts time. We had to think of 3 more ways to depict time.

My 3 ways to depict time are:

  1. Hair Growth – Hair Fall: The growth of hair as well as gradual hair fall is a way to depict time.
  2. Green land converted to buildings: Earlier there were only trees and greenery everywhere and then gradually people started cutting trees down and started to build buildings. This depicts the passage of time.
  3. Rusting of Iron: How any iron filing left in the open gradually starts to rust which is another way to depict the passage of time.

We had choose one of these ideas and click 6-7 pictures of them which would depict the passage of time. I chose Rusting of Iron as I have an interest in tools as I aspire to be a Product Designer, we have to show these images to sir in the next class.
