We started the class by talking about tools. A tool is like an object which we use for specific tasks, like using a hammer for hammering nails, drillers for drilling a hole, weapons for hunting/protection and what not. We revised the different kind of tools we had talked about in the last class.
We then moved on to discuss about civilisation. Civilisation is like a society. There are a few requirements required for being a civilisation:
- Food Supply
- Government- sense of order, born of a leader
- Culture- traditions, practices (contemporary form of culture- entertainment)
- Religion
- Social Structure
- Technology(development)
- Language
We started talking about the Indus Valley Civilisation. The Indus Valley Civilisation was an ancient civilisation located in what is Pakistan and northwest India today, on the fertile flood plain of the Indus River and its vicinity. Two cities, in particular, have been excavated at the sites of Mohenjo Daro on the lower Indus, and at Harappa, further upstream.

We discussed the different occupations which could be involved in the burial system. A person who digs the hole, someone who makes the pots for the burial, someone who handles the body.
There were many more occupations in the Indus Valley Civilisation:
- farmers– agriculture
- craftsmen
- soldiers– as there was a monarchy and boundary, the army was protecting it
- administration– there was monarchy(King)
- traders
- coin makers– trade purposes
- preachers
- dancers
- musicians
- priests
- architects– town planning
- engineers
- brick makers– buildings and architecture were made of bricks
- sculptors
- potters
- script writers
- Jewellers
- Toy makers
- Seals
- bangle makers
- doctors
- people who dug for burial processes
- teachers
- local vendors
- making the weights for trade
- Transportation
- Slaves
There were a lot of employment opportunities for the people. Since there were people in all sectors, there were a lot of occupations prevalent at that time.
