Week 6 (Imaging)

Today we started with Adobe Photoshop. It’s a software used for editing pictures. Ma’am showed us how to create a new file, we need to select an A4 print canvas with RGB as it’s colour mode, we need to make sure the print is in CMY mode and we need to use PSD for saving the file. She also told us the basic layout of the photoshop, the tool and layer palette. In photoshop, new objects get created on new layers and we can’t separate objects created in the same layer.

We first learnt about the move tool, it’s just like the selection tool in illustrator, it’s used to pick and move objects around the canvas. A layer thumbnail previews of what lies in the respective layer. We always have to create a new layer to make an object and we should never create anything on the background as we cannot move any object created in the background. Also, when you delete an object, its respective layer also gets deleted. To select two layers together, we go on the layer palette and click link tool.

We used ellipse and rectangular marque tool. When we select a Marque tool, the selection appears like marching ants. To deselect the selection, press Ctrl D. Ctrl T is used for transforming the selection, changing its size or rotating it and after transforming a selection, press Enter to enter the transformation in the canvas. We also used paint bucket tool which fills foreground colours.

Ma’am also told us a few shortcuts like Ctrl 0 is for fitting the canvas in screen, X is used for switching colours between foreground and background. Alt + Backspace is a shortcut for filling foreground colour in the object and Ctrl + Backspace is for filling background colour. Ma’am also told us to keep autoselect option on as it automatically selects the layer when the object is selected. She also showed us how to make a rectangle out of a square, we had to use the rectangular Marque tool and click delete, so it deletes the part which isn’t required and we get a triangle.

We first used the ellipse marque tool and drew an ellipse and then with the help of a paintbrush tool we painted the ellipse, the brush works inside the ellipse only as it is selected. Then we clicked Ctrl D and we got an object with colour filled inside it only. Ma’am also told to use Ctrl + Shift + I which would select the background and we can fill the background with the paint bucket tool.

Ma’am showed us 3 options in the menu bar: Add to selection, Subtract from selection and Intersect with selection.

  • Add to Selection Tool: Adds multiple objects to the existing selection.
  • Subtract from Selection Tool: Removes objects from the existing selection.
  • Intersect with Selection Tool: Highlights the area between two selections.

Ma’am told us a few more shortcuts before teaching us to edit a picture.

  • Ctrl J: Layer via copy- copies the object of a layer to the other layer.
  • Ctrl + Shift + J: Layer via cut- It cuts the selected object from the existing object in a new layer.
  • Ctrl + Shift + U: Desaturate- Desaturates the colour from the selection.
  • Ctrl I : Invert Layer- Inverts the colour of the selection.

After learning a few shortcuts, Ma’am taught us a filter for an image. We followed the steps given to us by Ma’am.

Open an Image on the Canvas
Click Ctrl J (Copies the Image to another layer)
Click Ctrl + Shift + U (Desaturates the Image)
Click Ctrl J once again(Copies the desaturated Image to another layer)
Click Ctrl I (Inverts the colour)
Click on Normal(Beside Opacity) in the layer palette and choose Colour Dodge(It is a blend option)
Go on Filter in the Menu bar and Click Filter
Click Blur and choose Gaussian Blur and adjust accordingly
Open an Image
Choose the Ellipse Marque tool and make an ellipse in the Image
Click Ctrl + Shift + I (Chooses the background and deselects the ellipse)
Make a New Layer
Fill the background colour
(In the above picture, I have used feather effect to make the image much better)

Before ending the class Ma’am taught us how to put multiple images in a picture and edit it. Whenever we put an image in the canvas, we have to rasterise it as it is a smart object(Scalable, Supports Vectors) and hence we won’t be able to edit it until and unless it’s a rasterised Image. Then we add a new layer and place an object in it and we make an ellipse around it and Click Ctrl+ Shift + I to select the background, we add a new layer and then we click delete which deletes the rest of the Image.
