Week 4 (Imaging)

We started the class by learning about drawing behind and drawing inside an object. It’s similar to sending an object to the back or bringing it to the front, but a simpler way.

Drawing behind and inside the circle.

We moved on by using clip mask. Clip mask allows you to insert images inside the object or text. We made a shape and put a picture in it. We also used two or three shapes in one picture. To use clip mask on multiple objects, we have to make them into a compound path, or else the image won’t be in all the 3 objects.

We then used feathering on objects. Feathering softens the edges of any object. We first feathered an object and later on used the same object and an image and used clipping mask, which gave the image an amazing effect. After using feathering, to put an image inside the object, we cannot directly choose the clipping mask option, we have to choose the transparency panel and click on “Make Mask”.

Ma’am showed us how to use the rotate tool to make a design with only one shape. Later on we learnt about live paint bucket tool which helps us to fill each closed path separately.

We also learnt about symbols. Symbols are basically reusable elements in the illustrator. Change in one symbol changes the other symbols in the artboard as well. We also created our own symbol by going to the symbol panel and selecting the second last option and clicking new symbol. Later on we played around with the different tools for symbols. They are:

  • Symbol Spread: Spreads symbols across the artboard creating a background.
  • Symbol Shifter: Shifts symbols.
  • Symbol Scruncher: Gathers or scatters symbols instantly.
  • Symbol Sizer: Increases/Decreases size of the symbol.
  • Symbol Spinner: Rotates the symbol.
  • Symbol Stainer: Selected symbols gets a pinch of the selected colour.
  • Symbol Screener: Changes opacity of the symbol.
  • Symbol Styler: Applies graphics to symbols.
